NiceTiming 2 is a new extension under the same name: the time tracker was rewritten, and a small island game grows from the hours you track. It updates Clocking Timer 1.x in place. On its first start it offers to import your 1.x sessions, and it keeps your settings.
NiceTiming 2 is free to use under a licence of its own (LICENSE.md, shipped with the extension), no longer the MIT licence; the 1.x versions stay under MIT. Syncing goes through NiceTiming Cloud: running your own server is no longer offered.
Tracking and the dashboard
- Time counts on its own while you type, read, move around your code, debug or run commands in the terminal, and while an AI agent edits your files (shown apart from your own time). A pause shorter than the idle threshold counts as work; a longer one ends the stretch at your last action. Several windows, and several computers with sync, never count the same minute twice.
- Today's total in the status bar, with every action one click away, and a Today view in the activity bar: the day, your goal and streak, and the coding agents at work.
- A dashboard for any period: the timeline (move part of a block to another project or task, change its category, remove it, add time spent away from the editor), projects, activity, reports, billing and progress. Every chart has a table view.
- Tasks, categories, tags, project renames, excluded files and folders, and an option to keep file extensions only.
- A manual timer, a Pomodoro timer that survives restarts, a reminder to take a break, and a question when you come back after an absence. Add time entry understands one line of English or French.
- Billing: hourly rates, clients, budgets with a warning at 80 % and 100 %, amounts per client and a timesheet. Ticket links: the tickets your branches, tasks and commits name (
#123,ABC-45) link to their page on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps or your own tracker, with the time spent on each. - Exports to CSV, timesheet CSV, Markdown, iCalendar and JSON; imports of NiceTiming backups, Toggl Track and Clockify CSV files, and NiceTiming 1.x.
- Your data stays on your computer, in plain text files that are only ever added to, with a compressed backup every day and a restore.
- The views follow your VS Code theme, high contrast included, read well in every default theme, and work from the keyboard. English and French.
- Light when idle: it starts small and loads each feature the first time you use it.
- A walkthrough, Get started with NiceTiming, under Help › Welcome.
AI
- Estimates for a new task from similar finished ones, insights about your rhythm, and forecasts for the week, the month and your budgets, worked out on your computer with the numbers behind them.
- Your stand-up, your weekly report and answers about your time, written by GitHub Copilot, an Anthropic API key, a local Ollama model or any OpenAI compatible server (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, OpenRouter, LM Studio, vLLM, llama.cpp), or from templates without one. Keys stay in VS Code's secret storage.
@nicetimingin the chat, and two tools other agents can use to read your reports.- The tokens your AI agents use (Claude Code, Codex, Aider, Cline, Roo Code and Kilo Code), by project, model, agent and day, with what they would cost at the public API prices. Numbers only: the text of your conversations is never kept.
- A coach for Claude Code and Codex: for each prompt, whether a lighter model or a lower effort would likely have done the same work, and what it would have cost, with weekly thrift quests. It reads the text of your prompts only if you allow it, and never stores it.
- Coding agents at work: Claude Code, Codex, Cline, Roo Code and Kilo Code sessions in the status bar, the Today view and notifications, with whether each one works, has finished or waits for you, and a click back to its terminal. Optional hooks make approvals and ends of turns exact.
NiceTiming Pro and billing
- Everything above stays free, and so does the whole island game, alone or online.
- NiceTiming Pro adds tools for people who follow their working time and their AI agents closely:
- Working time: a day and week planner with Google Calendar and Outlook, the coach Pro (recommendations from your own days, and their measured effect), estimates from your history, context switching, focus insights, written reviews, your own goals and an end-of-day recap.
- Requests to your AI agents: each request's cost, time and result, the time you save with agents, your sessions on one timeline, the model and effort that work best for you, loops spotted, your agents' context, a prompt history kept on your computer, and the cost of the sessions at work.
- Prompts: a panel that checks a request before you send it and suggests a rewrite, a prompt library with templates, starters and keyboard shortcuts.
- Business: PDF invoices, quotes, recurring invoices, reminders and Factur-X files; budgets of time, money or AI spend; custom reports as PDF or Excel; two-way sync with Toggl Track, Clockify, Harvest and Jira; titles and estimates of GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Linear and Azure DevOps tickets; Excel exports.
- Your data, your way: workspaces, automatic rules, custom fields, splitting a block, more choices for the status bar, and three more looks: Paper, Night sea and Sand.
- NiceTiming Cloud: every computer syncs and the web shows your whole history, an API with webhooks, and a weekly email.
- Pro comes with your NiceTiming Cloud account after each sync, or as a licence key (NiceTiming: Enter a licence key), checked on your computer, and keeps working for 14 days without a network. The Cloud offers a free trial without a card. When Pro ends, nothing you made is lost: invoices, reports, workspaces and rules stay readable, and only making new ones waits.
- A NiceTiming Pro screen (the dashboard's footer, the status bar menu) says what your account holds and what Pro has. No pop-ups, no countdowns.
- Island packs: five packs of looks for the island (Lighthouse coast, Winter cabin, Coral reef, Old harbour, Starry night), bought once and kept for good, previewed on your own island before you buy. They change how the island looks and nothing else.
The archipelago
- A voxel island grows with the hours you track: thirty expansions in its first 300 hours, a building for each project, a forest, a campfire for your streak, seasons, weather and the time of day. Walk around it with the keyboard, the mouse or a finger.
- A town to run while your AI codes: plots to buy, buildings with three levels, residents who earn coins, a cargo boat that loads while an agent works, daily requests, chests and looks. Real breaks give the island energy; night work is never rewarded, and a day off costs nothing.
- Six islands, each opening when the one before is complete (some sooner with research): the harbour island, an orchard island of fields, orchards and hives, a fire island whose workshops make goods for the others' orders, a market island with a shop to run, an ice island of sled expeditions, digs and skating, and a sky island whose observatory maps the constellations. Sail between them from Islands.
- Creatures: a first egg chosen among three, eggs that warm while you work, a care screen (feed, play, wash, tuck in, pet), evolution in daylight, 40 creatures in all with four legendaries, an orchard of berries, a smoothie bar, a book to fill, breeding, homes that make coins while you are away, and a wardrobe of hats. Only you look after them.
- Fishing in sixteen waters, in a relaxed, quick or skilled way, with 148 species and seven more that research brings, a collection, an aquarium and a tavern wall.
- A research centre with 148 researches in eleven branches: new places to build, animals, weather sights, music, festivals, photo mode and more for the islands.
- A construction kit of 140 pieces on every island, and new façades for the town's own buildings.
- The stadium: ten athletics events played with a few keys, with medals, and three-against-three battles against ten guardians. On NiceTiming Cloud, ranked runs against the ghosts of other players' runs, and duels.
- Expeditions on a sea chart, a museum to fill, four festivals a year, small activities of a minute or two, and a crew named after your coding agents, working at the workshop while they do.
- A journal written by a villager each evening, in English or French, in one of six voices.
- Share the island as a picture, a time-lapse video, a poster, a single web page or a public link, fly your own flag, and visit the islands others share.
- Comfort: a guided first day, a summary of what changed while you were away, focus mode, quiet hours, a small picture of the island in the Today view, reduced motion, and the island playable with the keyboard alone. The sound is off by default.
NiceTiming Cloud
- Sync with NiceTiming Cloud, optional: your time on the web, a Today page for the phone that installs on the home screen, invoices on the web, and public islands. The free plan syncs within limits; Pro syncs every computer.
- The island online: move your island to NiceTiming Cloud and the server keeps the game fair. It holds the coins, the town and the energy, decides every random draw and replays every race, fight and catch before it counts. Work counts only when it reached the server within three days, up to twelve hours a day.
- Competition: a weekly league in small divisions of people who play about as much, seasons of eight weeks with a pass of looks, boards for the season, for all time (never reset), for friends and for teams, rare achievements, a feed of friends' doings, invitations, a prettiest-town contest and an archipelago war between teams. Rewards are titles, frames, badges and looks, never power.
- Playing together: regattas, fishing duels, a weekly community boss, an auction house, friendly pirates and creature trades between friends.
- Teams with a shared sea of islands and a monument that grows with the team's hours. Messages in bottles between islands, with gifts the server holds until the owner decides.
What changed from 1.x
- The name is NiceTiming. The extension keeps its identifier, so Clocking Timer 1.x updates to it.
- Time lives in plain text files instead of a SQLite database. Your 1.x database is read once, to import its sessions, and never changed. Time synced to a 1.x server is not moved: the import reads the database on this computer.
- These 1.x settings carry over: automatic tracking, the idle threshold, the daily goal, the Pomodoro lengths and the game on or off.
- Sync is new: NiceTiming Cloud replaces the 1.x backend and web dashboard, and makes its sync tokens in its own Settings page.
- It needs VS Code 1.90 or later, and works in Cursor, Windsurf, VSCodium and the other editors built on VS Code (from Open VSX), and in remote and browser setups.
Moved or removed
- The Dashboard and AI Oracle Insights side views are replaced by the Today view, and the statistics and gamification panels by the dashboard and the island.
- Start a Pause and End Current Pause became Pause or resume tracking, Select Project became Assign this window to a project, and Create Backup Now became Back up now.
- Removed: Code Wrapped, the AI Oracle's predictions (burnout analysis, file completion, schedule optimization, model training), task complexity, the sync token and web login commands, the file decorations, and the
Ctrl+Alt+Tkeyboard chords. The local estimates, insights and forecasts above take over from the AI Oracle.
1.x
NiceTiming 1.x was published as Clocking Timer from December 2023 to August 2025, under the MIT licence. Each 1.x version came with its own changelog.
